  • Sometime today, the eleventh of November, a hundred years ago, my great grandfather (on my mother's side), John Walter Roy Wallwork, would have heard the news that the horrific war that he had just spent most of the past three and a half years fighting in had come to an end. It's hard to imagine how it would have felt to receive that news. He had survived the war, serving as both a driver and gunner with the AIF. He had been sick on multiple occasions, and wounded - he carried shrapnel in his body for the rest of his life. He ended the war suffering from what they used to call effort syndrome (most likely chronic fatigue). He left England a month after the war ended, returning home to Sydney on the 2nd February 1919. He spent some time in medical care following his return. He was discharged on the 21st February 1921. He was one of the lucky ones... I wonder, how many of his friends did not return? So many of all nations didn't... . They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn; At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them.
